About Pilates

P
ilates is a unique form of exercise developed in the US during the 1920's by German immigrant Joseph Pilates, as a method to lengthen and strengthen muscles. He began by training injured professional dancers. Not only did they recover from their injury very quickly, they became even stronger without developing thick bulky muscles. Since then it has been the training method of choice for dancers, olympic athletes as well as film and theater actors who need and desire strength, agility, and muscle tone—without bulk. In the past 10 years Pilates training has become more wide-spread to the public because of the tangible benefits, and because it leaves you feeling great—not exhausted after a workout. The Pilates Center for Fitness and Therapeutic Conditioning is a fully equipped facility emphasizing workouts on very specialized equipment: Reformers, Cadillacs, Wunda Chairs, Ladder Barrrel, and Arc Barrels. This equipment provides an exceptionally safe option for people of all fitness levels—including those who are limited by injury or disease. Utilizing all of our Pilates equipment provides the best adaptability—from those in wheel chairs to the super athlete—providing individualized workouts to address muscle imbalance, strength and flexibility issues. This unique Pilates equipment exercises the muscles in the way they function, utilizing arcing patterns and different planes of movement, instead of the linear movements employed by traditional gym weight equipment.

Most people don't realize how they compensate with stronger muscles to perform an exercise avoiding the weaker muscles which can lead to muscle imbalance and then pain. The Pilates technique also emphasizes correct posture in performing the exercises instead of trying to increase the number of pounds a person lifts. Because of this unique aspect of Pilates the well-trained and experienced instructor is a must for learning the correct exercise form and technique.

The Pilates Center, founded in 2002, is staffed with the most experienced and highly trained instructors in the Williamsburg area. Even our out of town clients are amazed at the quality of our instructors and facility. Our clients tell us they feel they receive good value for their Pilates dollars spent because of our level of knowledge, service, and variety of equipment.  Come see for yourself!
